Monday, December 1 – “Lord, I Am Not Worthy”

Scripture

“The centurion answered, ‘Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; but only speak the word, and my servant will be healed.’” Matthew 8:5–11

Reflection

In today’s Gospel, we meet a Roman centurion, a man of authority, accustomed to command, who approaches Jesus not with pride, but with humility and faith. His words, “Lord, I am not worthy,” echo through the centuries and are repeated by the Church at every Mass before receiving the Eucharist. This soldier’s faith becomes a model for every believer who awaits the coming of Christ: trustful, reverent, and open to grace. Advent invites us to the same interior posture. Before the mystery of the Incarnation, we recognize our unworthiness, yet we do not despair. Like the centurion, we trust in the power of Christ’s word to heal, forgive, and renew. The Lord does not ask for perfection before He comes; He asks for faith, a heart ready to receive Him. As members of the EOHSJ, this Gospel speaks deeply. The centurion’s humility transforms his command into service, his authority into faith. So too, the Christian knight or dame exercises strength through charity, leadership through humility, and courage through surrender to the Lord’s will.

Advent is a time to prepare the dwelling of our hearts for Christ. We may feel unworthy of His presence, but the mystery of grace is this: the Word made flesh desires to enter precisely into the places that most need His healing.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, speak but a word, and I shall be healed. Teach me the humility of the centurion, the faith that trusts in Your power, and the love that welcomes You with awe and gratitude. Make my heart a worthy dwelling for Your coming. Amen.

Meditation Question

Where do I most need Christ’s healing word today? How can I deepen my humility and faith as I prepare to receive Him this Advent?
